BEYOND MURDER TO ANGER

When Jesus was on this earth, He developed these ideas even further. He said,

"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, "Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgement." But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgement. Again, anyone who says to his brother, "Raca," is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, "You fool! " will be in danger of the fire of hell" (Mathew 5:21, 22).

The word 'Raca' means something akin to 'empty-headed fool'. Jesus said that the sixth commandment is not just about taking a human life but also deals with the taking of human dignity. Jesus spoke not just of our behaviour but also of our attitudes and intentions. It isn't enough that I refuse to murder someone; I must also deal with my anger and my hatred. I must be careful with my words, showing respect to other people.

The highest ideal that the sixth commandment expresses is not just that we must allow people to live. To fulfill the sixth commandment completely, we must enable life to flourish. We must do all we can to afford people the dignity they deserve. We must relieve human suffering. We must fight against prejudice, bigotry, privation, poverty, and anything else that stands as an affront to life it its fullest.

With Jesus, the commandment is more than just prohibited behaviour. We must love our enemies, bless those who curse up, pray for those who revile, give to those who ask, and go the second mile.

Get it right:
The sixth commandment involves a decision to replace anger, hatred, violence, and vengeance with love. "You shall not murder." You shall obey the law of love.
