WHEN THINGS GO WRONG

Now we turn our attention to another element that contributes to inner spiritual strength and poise: a firm belief in the goodness of God. No soul can experience deep inner peace unless it rests ultimately in the goodness of God.

The root of sin is the suspicion that God is not good. I had always believed that the root of sin was disobedience. And every action is preceded by a thought and when a thought contains doubts about the goodness of God, then it is easy for sinful behaviour that follow.

No soul can experience deep goods peace unless it rests ultimately in the goodness of God. If I were to live for a thousand years I doubt I would say something more important than that. If you go through life harbouring doubts about the goodness of God then your inner strength and poise will quickly be sabotaged.

Happiness, it has been said, depends on things happening happily. But what about when things don't happen happily? Can we still believe that God is good? We come to a critical issue here, for if we believe that God is good only when things go our way then when things don't go our way, or God doesn't give us the answer to our prayers which we desire, we will quickly lose our peace and poise.

And what good is a poise that depends on circumstances?
